Object creation
The first workshop of our foundation year started off with us getting into partners, one was blindfolded, the other had a pencil and paper. The partner who was blindfolded had to put their hand into a drawstring bag (which we had all sewn the day before) , and feel the random objects that had been put inside. As they did this, our partner had to describe what they were feeling so that the other person who was drawing could sketch whatever it was that was being described. After that we had to take these drawings and create a 3D version of our drawing out of cardboard and gum tape which turned out like this:
The second part of the workshop was to take our 3D object and create it again out of any other medium we wanted. I decided to do a long exposure photograph of the two main circles at the front of mine – I did this because I thought it was almost like going back to the beginning of the process but in a different way. This is because when we started out we couldn’t see what we were drawing, and the same goes for a long exposure, you can’t see the end product until the photograph is done.
Shadow workshop
We now had the object that we had created and the next step was to do abstract drawings of our objects and use different thickness pens, overlay lines and drawings and so on to create an interesting drawing.

Then we got another A2 piece of paper, layer it onto and traced interesting lines and patterns that we could pick out. Once this was done we cut parts of these lines out and bent them backwards so that we could then hold them up in front of a lamp and create really interesting shadows.
I went in afterwards and edited my photographs of the shadows and found that by changing the light/contrast/highlights…etc you could create really cool compositions and it allowed you to get rid of parts/see parts you hadn’t noticed before.
Photography
The last part of this section was to try three different photography lighting techniques:
- Copy Lighting – photography of our drawing
- Side Lighting – reveal the form and texture of our object
- Front Lighting – flattens the object
