Vin and Omi

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to work on a Vin and Omi fashion show as an opening for London Fashion week . I had never worked a fashion show before so I had no idea what to expect, I’ve seen fashion shows online and heard about them, but being there is a completely different experience. There are so many things to take in, such as the set up of the show, the competitive PR people fighting for a good position, the models getting ready, assistants and designers running around and then the guests who varied from casually dressed to some of the weirdest clothing I’ve seen before.
The collection was created by using eco-fabrics for example, flax and cow parsley had been blended together to create a fabric called Flaxley. There was also garments made from hybrid metal fabrics, which were made from cans that were collected by homeless people as part of a support programme based in Birmingham. They also recycled plastic bottles that had been left after menswear shows in July, and made them into pieces that were showcased on the runway. The event happened at the same time a YouGov report by Friends of the Earth was release which stated that only 45% of the public know that new clothing can be made from and contain plastic. – (The Guardian)

At the start of the show, held at St Pancras station in London, we set up chairs, organised the goodie bags for guests and held public out of certain sections whilst everyone around was setting up the lighting/their cameras etc. My job for the evening was to take photographs in the PR pit at the front on the runway which was an experience in itself. My friend and I had to push our way into a spot through the other photographers all trying to get the best shot. The collection was very interesting and was unlike other designs I have seen before which I really liked, I also got to know Vin’s PA during the show who explained how certain garments were made and how the whole show was set up and organised and the thought behind it.
Overall, the collection was interesting, I love the idea behind the clothing and the fact that they are made from fabrics that aren’t often seen on the runway, certain pieces were stunning and the colours were really bright and it all fit well together, however there were a few outfits which I wasn’t too keen on as an item of clothing but as a design I really liked the concept.
