Data Visualisation

Right now were completing a project about visualising data, so I started of by looking at ways people can visualise data 2D. Some of the most common ways to visualise data is through things such as bar charts and line graphs which the majority of people are aware of and understand as it’s a simple way of Laying out data that is easy for people to look at and compare.

I started off by collecting data about myself through a period of one week:

I then did some sketches of the data in my sketchbook to visualise it in 2D:

I also researched some artists who visualise data that we were introduced to at the start of this project and It was really interesting to see the different approaches. Theres Edward Tufte whose approach is to use all the data in order to show the top trends and also to be 100% accurate whereas David McCandless is another designer who shows only the most necessary data and will tweak the data to make it more visually pleasing and clear to look at.

I also looked at the Guardian newspaper who manage to convey massive amounts of information in clear formats that are engaging to the reader and clearly laid out which I really liked so in my 2D visualisations I tried to create things that were interesting to look at yet also conveyed data, mine were quite different to what the guardian does but I tied in elements such as colour use which I could use more effectively, however these were just sketches to help me build up to my 3D maquettes that I plan to make 🙂
