30 Maquettes

In our data project we were asked to make 30 maquettes which were a visualisation of the data we had collected about ourselves over a period of a week. We did a workshop with clay where I made some maquettes, the ones below are my favourites. The first one represents a graph that I drew that showed the hours of sleep I had, the second represented glasses of water that I drank and the bottom right has fingerprints all the way round which shows how many times I opened my phone with Touch ID.

We then did some paper maquettes where I made three maquettes based on my mood throughout the week which I have represented in various ways, by using coloured dots, folds and cuts to show if I was happy, sad, angry… etc.

One of my favourite paper maquettes was one that I had punched a hole in order to represent times that I laughed or smiled (that I was aware of) in a day. Not only do I like the Maquette itself I find the shadows and colour really interesting.

One of the Maquettes I made, which represented the dreams I had in the period of a week, required the use of the 3D studio. I started off with a black sheet of acrylic which has a plastic covering in order to protect it from scratches when cutting it. I stuck two pieces of masking tape in an x shape so I could draw a circle in pencil onto my acrylic and the lines would be seen. I then used a band saw to cut roughly around the circle. After this I used a sanding machine to create a smooth and precise edge. Safety requirements in the studio included the use of safety goggles and to always have your hair tied back, with any loose accessories like necklaces tucked away.

I used other materials like fabric which I either plaited to represent hair being tied up and then leaving them down to show that my hair was down.

I also tracked my journey using blue string and the places where its more concentrated and more crossed were where I spent the longest, for example home.

Another maquette I did which I really liked was tying thick carpet like strips into knots that represented stress I felt at one point.

I also painted the colours that I wore onto cardboard pillars I made which made me realise that I need to switch up my colour choices when choosing outfits 🙂 Making these maquettes has made me realise things about myself that I might not have noticed or weren’t obvious before and I liked how I could take numbers and data and create pieces out of them and I also like the development from 2D visualisations to 3D and to see the similarities and differences and also bits I may have put together or done after seeing my data played out in images infant of me.

I think the Maquettes I made reflect my data well, however, I think I could’ve used materials that would’ve been more reflective, for example, the one above that I made to represent the colours I wore, could’ve been made out of fabric or the actual material I was wearing, so denim for example.
